Smash The Club Interview: Vice

Published September 22, 2014

Los Angeles native, Vice, is no stranger to the music and club scene. DJing professionally for over 20 years, Vice was recently ranked #11 as “America’s Best DJ”. Vice’s unique set of skills behind the decks have landed him residences at some of the hottest night clubs (LIV Miami, Marquee, Create, Encore Beach Club), play the world’s biggest festivals (Nocturnal Wonderland, Electric Daisy Carnival), and play at cities (Ibiza, Tokyo, London, Hong Kong) all over the world. When he’s not traveling the world, Vice spends his time in the studio as a producer, and he was recently signed to Ultra Records. Aside from all that, he also owns his own sneaker shop (CRSVR), collaborated with Tumi for the DJ/Travel bag (Tumi x Vice Brief Pack), and Starter to create the DJ Vice x Starter Black Label snapback. Vice took a few minutes from his busy schedule to sit down and chat with us.

Where does the name Vice come from?
Found it in a Webster Dictionary when I was 12 years old – “Bad Habit”.

How did you get into DJing and producing?
I found the art of DJ’n when I was 12 years old at a family party and was in shock listening to music seamlessly blend together. It was like watching Jordan ball for the 1st time.

You’ve been a successful DJ for a long-time, what is the key to your success and longevity in the industry?
Always redeveloping your brand. Times change…trends change…I embrace change!

What has been the most memorable moment or biggest achievement for you as a DJ?
When I was asked to DJ on Power 106FM in Los Angeles at 18 years old. It was the radio station I grew up listening to.

Let’s say tomorrow you decide to start a tour with 3 other DJs, who do you bring along on this tour?
Erick Morillo & Jazzy Jeff.

Your design of the Tumi DJ backpack is well-designed, stylish, and functional for DJs, what is in your Tumi DJ backpack?
Tons of confetti from clubs because I forget to zip it shut! I also have an 11″ Air as well as a 13″ air….some cords, headphones, duck tape, energy bar, $500 casino chip, dental floss & glow in the dark rosary.

Deadstock (never worn) pair of 1985 Air Jordan Bred 1’s.

What is something many people don’t know about you?
I can ice skate.

What do you like to do to relax?
I actually enjoy running with no music…it clears my head.

Do you have any words of advice to aspiring DJs and producers?
Follow your passion first…the money will follow.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I don’t look into the future much…I try my best to stay in the NOW!

Any last words to your fans?
I didn’t do this for any other reason than the fact that music is my LOVE.
